A band of men; They were actually eleven. Dreamt a dream Yet unthought of, unseen. India, the country; Not yet free. The British were then Superior in every domain. The year was 1911 When this band of barmy men, Decided to take on the rulers Soccer grounds, their test of character. Studs on feet Wore the British. Barefooted the Indians countered Mental strength, their armour. The rival, was rivalled. The euphoria then, was unparalleled. Home team, new soccer champion. Their supremacy confirmed. A red-letter day indeed. An Indian soccer team’s heroic deed. This barmy band of eleven, Salute to their achievement.
PS : This poem is a poetic attempt of mine to highlight an important day in the history of Indian soccer. Our country doesn’t have much standing in the global soccer arena today. However, there was a time, when the British had introduced soccer in India and it became immensely popular as a sport in India. Yet the Indian clubs were no match for the fitter and hugely skilled British teams. Then on 29th July, 1911 all that changed. A popular Indian soccer club showed immense courage on the soccer field to take on the might of the East Yorkshire regiment’s soccer team and beat them to be crowned champions of IFA shield; a prestigious soccer tournament in British India then. Mohun Bagan, as they are named, were the first Indian team to defeat a British soccer team and become champions. Why their victory was an act of great courage was due to the fact that the British players wore football studs while the Indian team’s players played barefoot! For those interested, there is a Bengali movie by the name “Egaro” (Available on Youtube) which tells the tale of this historic soccer match.

India should represent herself in soccer tournaments on the global level. Your poem is simple and sweet. I enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing the important fact.👌

We are ranked 104 in the world. It isn’t that we were always this bad but things have changed through the years. One hopes the revamped soccer league can change things to some extent but there’s still a long way to go. 🙂

Yess…The beginning of the Champion in Mohun Bagan. Like every true Bong, I too take sides of either of the two clubs of Kolkata. Thanks so much for your words of appreciation Punam. 🙂

You are welcome. As a Bong one has to be a fan of either of the two clubs! 😀

This is a glorious poem, Goutam! Not only a tribute to a great showing in soccer but also in anything in life. “Mental strength, their armour” is much needed in today’s world. Thank you for joining in.

Wonderful history lesson. Sometimes the expectations can be thrown to the wind when the right courage and fortitude show up!

Fascinating! I never knew about this, but it’s an interesting piece of history. Has there ever been a movie made about it?

As I have mentioned, a movie in the regional language had been made a couple of years back. The soccer team’s name is Mohun Bagan and though the club itself was founded in 1889, they choose to celebrate their foundation day every year on 29th July, the day the historic event occurred. Last year, on 29th July 2020, the Nasdaq Billboards on Times Square featured the club; apparently to commemorate the event though I am not sure why or what led to this sudden commemoration. Other than that, this snippet of history remains largely unsung; primarily because soccer still remains a “not-so-popular” game in India. 🙂
